The present Purity Presbyterian Church in Chester began as Bull Run Church, and may have been organized as early as 1770. Although the church moved into town in 1839, the term Old Purity continues in common usage and usually refers to the ancient cemetery at the former site. Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Elizabeth Burkett, 74, are 1 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2004 at the Chapel of Dickson Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Larkin of Calvary United Pentecostal Church-Charlotte officiating. Visitation is Saturday, March 13, 2004 from 1 to 8 p.m. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery on Woods Valley Road.
Mrs. Burkett, of Cumberland Furnace, was born on May 26, 1929 in Tipton County, Tenn. She died on March 6, 2004 at Dickson County Nursing Home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her two sons, Ronald Burkett of Cumberland Furnace and Dan Burkett of Red Bud, Ill.; one brother, James Armstrong of Sikeston, Mo.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
